John T. Mitchell ’67 & ’94P and his wife, Sara Mitchell ’94P, made Providence College beneficiary of their individual retirement account valued at $50,000. The Mitchells’ generous planned gift will fund the John J. and Rosanna M. Mitchell Scholarship. The Mitchells established the fund on April 22, 2014, in memory of John’s parents. The fund shall be awarded to a student who meets the following criteria: a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces; a son or daughter of a veteran of the U.S. Armed Services; a member of the National Guard or Armed Forces Reserves who has not yet achieved veteran's status; any other student deemed by the College's Standing Committee on Scholarships to be deserving on the basis of financial need and academic merit.

John Mitchell was honored with the Friar Faithful Award during his 50th Reunion. John’s service as captain in the United States Navy, his generous and active support of Providence College and the National Alumni Association through phone-a-thons, alumni ambassadorship, NAA Council membership, and the signature Father Philip A. Smith, O.P. Student Fellowships for Study and Service Abroad, as well as for his volunteerism beyond the PC community including innumerable hours of adult literacy instruction, made him an excellent candidate for this recognition.
